1 in 59

In 2018 the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) released its update on the prevalence of autism in children nationally. Its new estimate: 1 in 59 children, with a startling 15% increase since its last estimate of 1 in 68 children two years prior.

As we see an increase in rates of autism documented nationally, we need to ensure that we are providing appropriate individualized services and supports for those affected by autism. One way we increase supports is by screening for autism when concerns are suspected. Visiting and discussing any concerns with the pediatrician can be a great place to start. Although children with autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2, the CDC’s report found the majority of children were diagnosed much later. Early diagnosis is critical – research shows that the earlier we can intervene, the greater the opportunity to provide lifelong benefits.

Intervention may consist of multiple professionals, including behavior analysts (BCBAs) who provide applied behavior analysis (ABA). ABA therapy and interventions, which decrease challenging behavior and increase appropriate behavior in areas such as communication, learning, and social skills, are endorsed by the Surgeon General of the United States, the CDC, and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities as a recommended and evidence-based therapeutic approach for individuals with autism.
